About Us
Helena's Story
People often ask me why I started YOUbuntu.
The answer is simple. I don't want another child to grow up feeling the way I did.
As a Mixed-Race child, I experienced racism from a young age. Those experiences stayed with me and shaped who I became. They also inspired a lifelong passion for education, understanding and creating spaces where everyone feels they belong.
For over 20 years, I've worked in education, beginning with teaching dances of Black origin across the UK before moving into wider educational work. Throughout my career, I've seen just how powerful honest conversations can be. I've also seen how often they're avoided—especially when it comes to race.
That's why I created YOUbuntu.
Since founding YOUbuntu, I've had the privilege of supporting thousands of students, educators and professionals build confidence in racial literacy through open, engaging and judgement-free conversations.
YOUbuntu is built on the belief that education creates understanding, understanding builds empathy, and empathy inspires change. My mission is to motivate the spirit of Ubuntu within you—to spark the conversations and confidence needed to create a more inclusive world where every child feels they truly belong.
Our Mission & Values
At YOUbuntu, our mission is to inspire meaningful change by creating safe, honest and inclusive spaces where people feel confident to explore race, identity, culture and belonging.
Real change doesn't begin with having all the answers. It begins with creating a space where people feel safe enough to ask the questions.
Through education, open conversation and lived experiences, we help individuals and organisations build racial literacy, challenge unconscious bias and develop the empathy needed to create genuinely inclusive communities.
We believe that lasting change begins with understanding. By encouraging curiosity instead of judgement, and authenticity instead of fear, we empower people to have the conversations that many avoid—but that all of us can learn from.
The Ubuntu Philosophy in Practice
Ubuntu is a way of seeing the world through our shared humanity.
Often expressed as "I am because we are," it reminds us that our lives are interconnected and that our wellbeing is strengthened through kindness, compassion, respect and community.
It is a philosophy that values people above prejudice and understanding above division.
The spirit of Ubuntu runs through every YOUbuntu session.
We know conversations about race can feel uncomfortable. Many people are afraid of asking the wrong question, using the wrong words or accidentally causing offence. That fear often prevents the very conversations that help us grow.
That's why we actively encourage questions—especially the awkward ones.
Nobody is judged for what they don't yet know. We believe every question asked respectfully deserves an honest answer, and every conversation is an opportunity to build greater empathy and understanding.
By creating spaces where people feel safe enough to be authentic, we help transform uncertainty into confidence, discomfort into learning, and conversations into meaningful change.
